May’s program will be our annual meeting at Arcosanti. The program will be on Thursday, May 19th and will be a talk by Paola Soleri himself followed by a delicious home cooked dinner by Arcosanti residents. We will meet at 4pm in the visitor center, presentation at 4:30pm. If you would like a tour please be there at 3pm for the tour presented by Arcosanti staff. Space is limited so please RSVP to Holly ASAP. Join us for this once in a lifetime event!

Universal Design” Designing for Social Sustainability by Chris Lanterman-NAU “Universal design…is an orientation to any design process that begins with a responsibility to the experience of the user” (Institute for Human-Centered Design, 2011). Designing residential, public, and commercial facilities that are responsive to the range of potential users, including children, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and visitors from other lands, adds to the social sustainability of a community. We will discuss the principles of universal design, various applications of these principles, and how they can support environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

We meet at 12N on the mezzanine of the Weatherfor Hotel 23 N. Leroux, Flagstaff. Lunch provided for AIA members. Please email Holly if you have any questions.

Friday February 18^th meeting at Barking Frog Grill in Sedona- Lunch and Learn

We meet in the Private room of the Barking Frog Grill at 2620 W. State Rt 89A at 12N. Jerry Ufnal from the APS Business Solutions Program will do a presentation on the APS Business Ally Program. This is a great program for acquainting you and your clients with the numerous rebates and tax credits for energy efficient projects. Lunch is provided for AIA members. Friday March 18^th Member meeting at the Elks Opera House in Prescott-Bill Otwell AIA, will give a tour of the newly renovated Elks Opera House near the square in downtown Prescott. Annual December Member Meeting in Prescott, December 10^th. We will meet at the Peacock Room in the Hassayampa Inn at 4:30pm for a delicious dinner early enough to allow us to enjoy the Acker Music Showcase in downtown Prescott. If you have never attended the Acker Music Showcase, you are in for a treat and a variety of Holiday music at locations throughout downtown Prescott. AIA members and Associates eat free. November 12^th Member meeting in Payson! We will meet at Kohl’s Ranch Lodge just outside Payson for a Lunch and Learn. Michael Caputo with Timbertech, will be providing a Continuing Education talk about ‘Building a better Deck’. Information will include choosing the right material, deck designs, care and maintenance and more. Lunch is provided for all AIA members and associate members. October 8th meeting at the Grand Canyon! Meeting open to all AIA members- The Friday, October 8th Meeting of the Grand Canyon Chapter will be a special presentation on the South rim of the Grand Canyon. Morgan O’Connor, Environmental Director of the Grand Canyon Railway, will talk about the innovative sustainable projects the railway and the Concessionaire of the Grand Canyon are undertaking to tread more lightly on the earth. In his two years at the GCR, Morgan has developed, implemented, and maintained environmental strategies and programs aimed at reducing the GCR’s carbon footprint. Joel Southall, Director of Environmental Affairs, Xanterra South Rim Grand Canyon will share what the Concessaire Xanterra is doing at the National Parks to help keep the environment ‘green’. We will have a scrumptious dinner overlooking the beautiful Grand Canyon, which is paid by AIA Grand Canyon Chapter for all AIA Arizona members. We will meet in the Thunderbird lodge at 5:00pm on Friday October 15th. Please RSVP to Holly at hjaleski@gmail.com by October 7th. The Canyon will be displaying its fall colors. Thursday,September 2nd Meeting of the AIA Grand Canyon Chapter- CEU presentation from Lutron – 5:30pm, Weatherford Hotel-Flagstaff. This presentation will also give Credential Maintenance Program credits for LEED-AP’s so come get a credit for two professions at once! Food provided. Lumberyard Brewing Company Taproom and Tavern Tour

Please join us for a tour and tasting at the new Lumberyard Taproom and Grill! This restaurant and brewery is scheduled to receive the 2010 Coconino County Sustainable Building Award and includes many sustainable features such as: City reclaimed water used for landscape needs, repaired and reused original building trusses, roof metal and old lumber was re- purposed for the bar and dining area and water saving toilets and urinals installed in the bathrooms. Other important sustainable features include the use of local contractors and local products. Tour will be provided by Architect Ryan Smith and owner Winnie Hanseth.

Cost is $5 for members of USGBC-Arizona Chapter and $10 for non-members. Please RSVP to Holly by Wednesday June 9th, at
